G.I. Joe: Retaliation held on to first place at the overseas box office this weekend with an estimated $40.2 million. Through less than two weeks, it's earned $145.2 million, and it will pass predecessor Rise of Cobra's $152 million total by mid-week.
According to distributor Paramount Pictures International, holdover markets dipped an average of 46 percent, which is better than Rise of Cobra at the same point. The sequel's top territory was South Korea with $3.7 million, followed by Russia with $3.2 million.
With Japan and China still on the way, Retaliation looks destined to wind up with over $250 million overseas. The Croods continued its impressive foreign run with a $34.3 million haul from 61 markets. It held first place in Australia ($3.6 million) and the U.K. ($3.57 million), and was back in first in Germany ($3.14 million) as well. The movie has so far earned $205.4 million overseas; it opens in France, New Zealand and Turkey this coming weekend, and still has Japan and China on the horizon. Jack the Giant Slayer added $11.6 million from its 60 markets this weekend. To date, it has grossed $117.4 million, and is on pace to close with less than $150 million overseas. Oz The Great and Powerful earned $13.6 million this weekend for a new foreign total of $241.3 million. It's currently in release in every market, and continues to be in line for a final worldwide tally around $500 million.
Coinciding with its domestic debut, the Evil Dead remake opened in 21 markets and earned $5.2 million. It did well in Russia ($2.3 million) and Spain ($1.4 million), though it barely registered in Mexico ($350,000). Jurassic Park 3D also hit the overseas circuit this weekend and snagged $3.4 million from a handful of territories. It was solid in Russia ($1.5 million) and also took in an impressive $693,000 from just 26 theaters in Australia. Universal is planning to slowly roll out this title over the next six months, and it will be most interesting to see how it performs in China (where Titanic 3D earned $145 million).
Next weekend, Oblivion opens in 51 markets including all of the major ones except Japan and China. The goal here is clearly to get a jump on Iron Man 3, which officially kicks off the Summer movie season by opening almost everywhere (except the U.S.) on the last weekend of April.
