To kick off Super Bowl weekend, zombie romance Warm Bodies easily took first place on Friday ahead of some quiet holdovers. Among the other newcomers, Bullet to the Head was a miss, while Stand Up Guys barely registered.
Warm Bodies opened to $8.1 million, which includes $520,000 from Thursday night previews. That's lower than Zombieland's $9.45 million, and also a tad off from Chronicle's $8.6 million on the same Friday last year. Still, this is a very good tally for such a unique movie; Summit is now forecasting between $19 and $20 million for the three-day frame.
In third place, Silver Linings Playbook added an estimated $2.42 million. Remarkably, that's actually up three percent from last Friday, which reinforces how strong the word-of-mouth is on this title. It's now earned $74.7 million, and is on pace to pass $80 million this week. Mama dipped 41 percent to an estimated $2.3 million on Friday. To date the supernatural horror movie has grossed $53.8 million, and sometime today it will top Paranormal Activity 4 ($53.9 million) to become the highest-grossing horror movie in over a year.
Sylvester Stallone action movie Bullet to the Head rounded out the Top Five with a terrible $1.74 million. That's lower than Parker ($2.15 million) and The Last Stand ($2.03 million), which makes this the worst start for an Expendables co-star recently. For the weekend, Bullet to the Head could wind up just above $5 million. Zero Dark Thirty eased 30 percent to $1.63 million; its $74.1 million total is now a bit behind Silver Linings Playbook, and it remains on pace to close below $100 million.
In 14th place, Stand Up Guys opened to an estimated $528,000 from 659 locations. For the weekend, Lionsgate is forecasting around $1.45 million.
